CADAQUÉS

Juan Ignacio Valls Romo

Cadaqués is in the region of Alt Empordà, and belongs to Girona, Catalonia. It is a tourist and fishing village, considered one of the most eastern of the entire peninsula. This town has about 3,000 inhabitants and its economy is based mainly on tourism, due to geographical and cultural attraction. The origin of the word "Cadaqués" is "Cap de Quers" which means "Cape of Rock".

As it could be otherwise, the weather and food are obviously very Mediterranean. In summer, the weather is very hot in the whole Costa Brava, prevailing dry weather and high temperature range. Relating to the food, this is based on fish and vegetables, with a basic ingredient as is olive oil. Fish and seafood abound on the coast due to fishing work. As for vegetables, the most common and used in Mediterranean cuisine (along with rice for paella, gazpacho and other...), are based on the use of pulses for salads.

Apart from that, one of the most interesting and most visited places of Cadaqués is the house of the genius of surreal, Salvador Dali. It is situated in Portlligat Bay, north of the town, surrounded by the beautiful landscape that inspired the artist. The house is formed by a group of fishermen's huts that are still intact on the banks of the place.  Since 1997, it is open to the public and within the same we can see the great work and memory of the painter, his workshop, his room, his garden and pool...

In addition, Cadaqués has been the residence of many other artists and celebrities, like for example; Pablo Picasso, Federico García Lorca, Marcel Duchamp... In conclusion, the extraordinary and isolated landscape has become a factor of attraction for artists and tourists. So, spending the summer in Cadaqués is nothing new, but is still a pleasure for many people.

  1. In the same way that a car company will update a car as more technology is invented; one will update their views as and when they become aware information that refutes what they believe.
