Campisàbalos

Andrea García Guillén

Campisábalos is a little Spanish village situated in the province of Guadalajara, in the autonomous region of Castilla La Mancha. This warm and beautiful village, with a population of 65 inhabitants, has a couple of interesting stories about the etymology of its place name.
The place name of “Campisábalos has no solid origin base. One version, pretty traditional, tells us that so many years ago there was a great battle around its forests. The result of this battle was a large number of people died. One of the victorious generals proclaimed that it had been a really successful victory, adding that the enemy field was such plenty of corpses that when they were coming back to their houses, crossing the field, the dog they carried with them stepped the corpses. Hence the name “Campisábalos”: can (dog) + pisábalos (stepped them).
Another version makes reference to the large number of fishes called “sábalos” which were seen in the streams of the region. Thereby, this village was named as “campo de sábalos” and later, “Campisábalos”.
